Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area spans 13 acres. It offers great opportunities for hiking, as visitors can explore the footpaths along the gorge and enjoy the scenic views. Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area is unstaffed but is open to the public for recreation year-round at no charge. Picnic tables and flush toilets are available from June through September yearly. Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area, like all N.H. state parks, is a carry in - carry out park. Please take home all your trash.
A single man's generosity played an integral role in the preservation of Chesterfield Gorge. George White, a local farmer, bought the land in 1936 to prevent encroaching loggers from clear-cutting it. He sold fifteen acres of the gorge to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. The land was then donated to the State of New Hampshire.
