Description
Old barn in winter snow.
.....
An early snowstorm that October made Old Man Crochets scary old barn of a house all that much creepier. He was as old as hills, wrinkled up like a dried up coffee filter and bent over nearly to the waist only held up by the garled up grape stalk he used as a cane. We hadn't seen him around since the snow fell and half wondered if he was alive.
Visiting the weathered, beaten old homestead certainly wasn't the most valuable prize on old country lane. That award went to the Johnson's in the big new house at the end of the road. They gave out whole chocolate bars and didn't seem to mind if you went home, switched masks and came back for seconds. Even under the new Halloween disguise they would still call out your name and praise your costume.
"Oh Peter, you've given me such a fright with your Frankenstein Monster costume. Such an imaginative boy." Mrs. Johnson would say. And then just thirty minutes later she exclaim "Whoa, Peter that mask certainly is creepy. Would you like almonds or no almonds?"
But the old Crochet place was a different sort of prize. The last time any one really can every remember receiving something from the old man was back a few years and all the brave soul got was a grimy old penny.
You see the old Crochet house was rumored on good authority to be haunted and the man who lived in the house was said to capture children, cook them in his basement and preserve them in pickle jars.
It was the kind of place you were dared and double dared to trick or treat at and no one dared take up the dare. At least no one who lived to tell the tale.
