I accept the fact that most people prefer clean, sanitized, modern, urban environments to the gritty, old, dirty, industrial.
But as a photographer and lover of history, I think a city loses a lot of character when the past is wiped away. When the brick and rusty steel is replaced by concrete and glass. When the individual family businesses are replaced by corporate monopolies.
Once a Starbucks or Trader Joes comes into a neighborhood, it's finished. The Yuppies move in and the longtime residents move out along with their diversity. I'm happy to be able to preserve the past whenever I can with my camera.
The Union Market area of Washington DC is one such place. Once an industrial area with wholesalers and meat butchers - it is now being developed into condos, shops, apartments and food courts. I still managed to capture some of the remaining businesses offering fresh cow feet and whole smoked goat.
