The Smallest State Park Is A Ghost Town

ELKHORN, MONTANA - Montana's smallest state park is a ghost town called Elkhorn. At its peak the remote mining town had 2,500 residents, now there are only 12 according to the lastest census.

A mix of privately owned remnants of the old mining cabins, trading post, stamp mill, and protected social halls as well as a graveyard and steam train water tank are all that's left. Photographer Edward Fielding aims his camera at the remaining details in this photographic essay of an old mining ghost town that basically disappeared overnight.

Do old mining towns truly die? Elkhorn had its ups and downs over the years, sales, restarts, crashes and booms. The last operation at the mine ended in 1971. The state created a state park basically to protect two buildings in 1980. Dry Montana weather protects these wooden buildings beyond what one might expect but they do have a finite life.

Artist Edward Fielding Photographs The Historic Story Mill Bozeman Montana

BOZEMAN, MONTANA - Fine art photographer Edward Fielding (www.edwardfielding.com) recently visited the historic flour mill on the edges of Bozeman, Montana and created a photo essay of this piece of Western history.

By the early 1900s, the mill was the region’s largest employer. Dry land farming, crop diversification, and competition between the Northern Pacific and the Milwaukee Road broadened Bozeman’s agricultural industry in the early 1900s. Nelson Story, an early Montana pioneer, built a flouring mill in 1882 at the mouth of Bridger Canyon, a few miles north of Bozeman, and with the help of his sons, Nelson Story Jr. and T. Byron Story, conducted the business several years, then sold to the Bozeman Milling Company that also erected a cereal mill.

To truly see the country, one must get off the highways and explore the backroads. Once in Hot Springs, Arkansas and Dallas, Texas's arts districts, Fielding was able to stretch the old camera legs and photograph.

Fine Art Photographer Edward M. Fielding What Excites Him As An Artist

GRANTHAM, NH

As a photographer and artist, what excites me is finding a great subject along the backroads of America, far from the tourist spots. Typically it's just me, my camera and my tripod working for hours on some old barn or old abandoned car in some remote corner of the country.

Someplace or scene that people perhaps drive by or walk by every day without even noticing.

Recently I spent a rainy morning in a downtown Chicago parking lot photographing and filming the commuter trains coming and going through the complicated switching junction of The Loop area. To me, it was like blood pumping through the circulatory system of the city.

Other times you might find me on a beach on Cape Cod capturing the repeating pattern of a row of historic cottages along the shore. Or finding beauty a rusting row of vintage cars in a scrapyard in Utah.

Perhaps you'd see me training my tilt-shift on an old gas station near an abandoned gold mine...

Old Friends – two old rusty vintage cars in the high desert of Arizona. “Wickedest Town in the Westâ€. Jerome Arizona. Located near the top of Cleopatra Hill between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome.

Jerome was nearly a ghost town until the state offered free houses to anyone willing to occupy them and fix them up. Artists moved in and inhabited the structures which appear to be hanging on to the cliffside for dear life.

Underneath the town is vast mining tunnels that often blew up and burned with mine fires that lasted for months.

Cracks in foundations and buildings that slide from one side of the street to the other are all just part of the charm as is the ghosts of prostitutes and miners that are said to walk the streets at night.

Photographer Captures Washington DC Beyond The Mall

WASHINGTON, DC - Fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding has just completed a photo shoot in the Nation's Capital, Washington, DC and his starting to release images into the new "Places - Washington, DC" portfolio for purchase as prints and artwork.

Having lived in the suburbs of Washington, DC in early childhood as well as returning for the popular eighth-grade and senior class trips as well as on business trips over the years, Fielding was quite familiar with the monuments and buildings that make up the National Area.

This photo trip, Fielding explored areas of "The District" not usually seen by tourists such as Union Market and Shaw. Guided by an old work friend who has been living in The District for a few decades, we see in Fielding's work that Washington, DC is more than a collection of marble-columned buildings but is actually a living and breathing American city where people of all stripes eat, shop, work, live and create.

The Straight Photograph – artless, useless or profoundly compelling?

Fine art photographer Edward Fielding’s series of photographs of the “Flower Cottages†on Cape Cod are an example of straight photography.

Straight on, center composed, documentary style photographs which when viewed individually seem meaningless but when grouped or arranged, take on more meaning.

When viewed as a sequence in the form of a book or gallery show, the viewer begins to see the subtle differences between the seemingly identical vintage summer rental cottages.

The Flower Cottages series by Edward Fielding consists of twenty-two nearly identical cottages in all. Seen side by side the viewer is compelled to spot differences in window treatments, condition of the vinyl siding, changes in the...

Photographer Explores Ghost Town Famous For Murder And Mayhem

NELSON, NV - “Last Chance Gas†https://edward-fielding.pixels.com/featured/last-chance-gas-vintage-car-abandoned-gas-station-edward-fielding.html is a fine art photograph of an old abandoned gas station in old mining ghost town at the edge of the Nelson, Nevada. This photograph combines seven images taken under the hot Nevada sun in 115 degree weather.

Nelson, NV is practically a dead town itself with a population of less then 40 hardy souls trying hard to not dry up and blow away under the harsh conditions of the desert climate.

One doesn’t seek out a life in Nelson for ease of living, perhaps more for cheap accommodations or the hiding from something.

The Techatticup Mine was once a hotbed of lawlessness, murder, treachery, and claim-jumping. In the mid-1800s the hills in this area swarmed with miners, civil-war deserters and wanted men digging into the earth following vines of gold and silver. No law man would dare enter this den of murder and...

A hostile environment that never the less became the idea of freedom and opportunity to seekers of religious freedom and wealthy in the form gold, silver and tin.

For others, it was a new beginning after the Civil War tore the country apart. Fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding explores what was left behind by these early settlers. There homes, their vehicles, their mines - relics of the past. A place of boom and bust of fortune for some but misfortune for most. A dream that lasted only a few years that led only to heartbreak.

The collection features photographs from ghost towns across the Southwest including Nevada, Arizona and Utah.

SEARCHLIGHT, NEVADA - Fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding (edwardfielding.com) trekked into the Nevada desert under the blazing hot sun to photograph in old abandoned school buses and vintage vehicle baking under 115 degree heat. Hot enough to fry an egg on the oxidating metal hoods of these old cars, Fielding shot with a tripod, tilt-shift lens and a black Canon 6D camera body that became too hot to touch with bare hands. "I never drank as much Gatorade as I did that day in the desert. They say it is a dry heat, but 115 degrees is no joke no matter how dry it is".

There Is A Lot To See In This Black And White Still Life

Grantham, NH - Black and white photography is a study of zen, ying and yang, balancing the dark shadows with the bright highlights. Creating an interplay of tones for light to dark.

Black and white photography strips away the distracting color and shows the eye a new way of seeing. A world in which only black, white and 265 distinct shades of gray in between can be detected by the human eye.

This is all you get to render a compelling image that stops the wandering eye. Dark and light, creating drama, intrigue, mystery and the exploration of wonderful texture. The skin on a pear. The timeworn scratches on an antique wooden bowl. The deep grain of an old wooden plank.

Stripped of color new information comes to the surface to take its place. Composition becomes paramount. The arrangement of the objects within the scene and within the frame becomes more important than color theory.

Lighting is crucial to the overall effectiveness of the final image....

This series of photographs of Cape Cod go beyond the postcard and tourist brochure images and dip into the reality of man's effect on the natural beauty of the Cape.

Photographer Finds Photographic Gold In The Middle Of The Nevada Desert

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - For fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding (edwardfielding.com) finding abandoned vintage cars in the middle of nowhere in the hot Nevada desert is pure photographic gold.

Shooting in 115-degree heat under an unrelenting cloudless sky with no breeze presents a challenge for both photographer and photo equipment. With black plastic outer bodies of the camera reaching scalding temperatures, even controlling the focus ring has to be done with care.

Setting up a tripod and tilt-shift lens for multiple exposures, high dynamic range photographs of these handsome old cars abandoned in the American Southwest deserts, an hour from the nearest city, took great care and a lot of water for the photographer.

"I couldn't work more than 20 minutes at a time without feeling faint" said fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding of the experience. "I had to work for twenty minutes and then sit in the AC with a large Gatorade for about 30 minutes to...

Behind The Image Auto Repair

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH

We didn’t get to the Gold King Mine until about an hour before closing and November sun was already low in the horizon. We didn’t have long to take it all in and had to move quickly – compose, expose and move along.

I found this great scene of an old vintage automobile in a state of repair in the old garage. The amount of detail was incredible. My Canon 16-35mm lens on my Canon 6D was perfect for the task of setting the car in the scene with all of the delicious detail.

I chose a center composition for this shot. I often go with center compositions despite my art school son’s scolding because many of my images end up in my book cover portfolio.

Back home in New Hampshire I sat down to evaluate the image and do the post-processing. The Canon 16-35mm did a great job in capturing all the sharp detail but I wanted to highlight the car as the main subject.

The highlights from the sunlight streaming in from the...

The Story Behind The Iceland Chair Photograph

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ICELAND - Fine art photography Edward M. Fielding releases a short video essay showing the travel and effort required to capture his popular image of an isolated wooden chair in the middle of a desolate valley of volcanic rock.

"Not every photograph I take requires this much effort but “Iceland Chair†took a bit of traveling to the end of the world to discover and photograph." - Edward M. Fielding.

Iceland – A small wooden chair painted white sits along on top of a remote overlook of black volcanic rock.

The desolate valley stretches below with mountains in the distance. This might be a scene from another planet for all we know, except for the thin ribbon of a road in the distance reflecting light on it’s wet surface as it snakes through the landscape.

The story of how fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding came to set up his camera and tripod in front of this unique subject in Iceland is told in this short...

Is he who he says he is?

Izzie Mallon is looking forward to celebrating Christmas on a relaxing yoga retreat. At least, that is what she's telling her mother and colleagues. In reality, she will be shutting herself away from the festive season, and the snowstorm that has brought the city to a standstill, in her apartment on Henrietta Square -- the beautiful home she shared with her beloved husband Sam until his tragic death a few months ago -- with only her grief for company.

Then, there's a knock at the door -- a stranger, stranded by the bad weather.

He tells Izzie that he's Eli Sanders, her husband's long-time friend. Izzie has never met him in person, but feels she owes it to Sam to welcome Eli into her home. Even though her instincts say that she should do otherwise...

As Izzie tries to reminisce with...

Photographing A Hundred Year Old Barn In Vermont

Ely, Vermont - Fine art photographer photographs an old wooden barn in Vermont. Imagine the day in 1899 when the builder of this beautiful old barn hammered in the last peg on the timber frame.

According to the great, great grandson Brian A. George "this barn was built by my great great grandfather but was mostly utilized by my great grandfather Gordon George who ran the farm until he died in 2007"

And there it still stands. Certainly not in mint condition but still standing after all these years. They overbuilt this old barns. Rather than using computers and engineering studies, they simply used really, really thick lumber just to make sure it could take the weight of livestock, hay and later iron farm equipment and tractors.

This fine art photograph of the old George Family Farm Barn from 1899 can be purchased as prints, canvas prints, framed and matted artwork and...

10 Vintage Tractors To Know And Love

Best selling fine art photographs of vintage tractors
Why do farmers hang on to old, vintage, antique tractors and still use them on the farm? Because they last and they are easy to maintain.

The true beauty and lasting appeal of old tractors. They are incredibly simple, purely functional. They are easy to work on. You can reach just about any part with an ordinary socket wrench or screwdriver.

They might not have cup holders but they might come with their own toolbox for quick fixes in the field. No fussy computer to go out of date. No fancy fuel injectors to foul. Everything is made of solid thick steel or iron and they were built to last.

Here are ten of the best selling old tractor photographs and artwork from the Vintage Tractor Collection – https://edward-fielding.pixels.com/collections/vintage+tractors

A Little Courtesy Goes A Long Way

Take only photographs, leave only footprints. If all photographers (hikers, fishermen, tourist etc) would only think of those who come after them, the world would be less hostile to visitors from away.

I recently spent $10 an hour photographing an old mining town in the Nevada desert and I was happy to pay for the privilege to photograph this well maintained private collection of cool old stuff.

Not only did the fee help keep this great place running for future photographers to visit but it gave the owners a chance to explain the rules as well as the dangers such as rattlesnakes and cactus. It also keep the crowds away for a pleasant time on the property.

Interview With Fine Art Photographer Edward M. Fielding

A new interview with fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding is now available on "Our Arts Magazine". Excerpt:

Who are your biggest influences?

I used to pour over photography monographs at the college library when I went to Boston University, so I have a lot of influences and inspirations – Diane Arbus, Mark Klett, Edward Ruscha, William Wegman, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Irving Penn, Jan Groover, the Bernd and Hilla Becher

– I kind of parted ways with contemporary fine art photographers when the work started being more about composites than straight on photography.

6 Reasons To Love Pop Art

January 22nd, 2018

6 Reasons To Love Pop Art

I’ve been creating a lot of pop art lately. My subjects range from TVs to classic VW buses. I’ve been exploring colorful and repeating themes. What has drawn me to pop art lately has been this long drawn out winter. Who doesn’t like a injection of bold colors and classic subjects that speak to fun and perhaps summer? Here are a few reasons that I personally like Pop Art. See if you agreeâ€

1. Pop Art is fun. Lets face it, when you visit a museum, the pop art section is pure fun after looking at all of the carnage, rape, war, beheadings etc in the old masters section and the sorrowful commentary of modern society in the contemporary art section. The pop art displays are pure, unadulterated fun.

Art Prints
2. Pop Art is approachable. Taking clues from popular culture, pop art’s subjects are things the general public deals with every single day. From soup cans to superheros, Pop Art reflect what we like best about the world around us – food,...

The Virtual Poetry Series By Edward M. Fielding

The Virtual Poetry Series of fine art composite photographs by fine art photographer Edward M. Fielding is an exploration into the surreal. Created as an exploration into imagery, dreamscapes and the imagination, the series started with not particular goal or direction. Arrangement of the various layers and imagery lead from one to another as a playful journey into the unknown began with the collection of original photographs.

At the start of each image in the series, only a few selected images were used to spark the unconscious exploration. A few elements bind some of the images together, the blank piece of paper or canvas that is the start and the fear of every artists or author. The blank piece of paper on the typewriter begging to have a story told, the blank canvas mocking the artist to begin a new piece. The paper ripped up and throw in the trash or folded into a paper airplane and sent aloft.

Ideas for images and concepts are often well planned...

Portrait Of A Dairy Cow

November 8th, 2017

Portrait Of A Dairy Cow

I recently found myself in Stowe, Vermont for a rainy afternoon. My wife had a conference at the Spruce Lodge and I had the afternoon free. Fall foliage had already come and gone with the last leaves being ripped off by a breezy, stormy day. But I was determined to get out and photograph the beautiful country side around Stowe. I came across a herd of dairy cows gathering near the farm gate, hoping that it was getting close to milking time. One cow in particular caught my eye and I was able to capture a few nice portraits. Managing to keep my gear dry and shooting wide open in the dark and gloomy late afternoon cloudy sky, I manage to capture this sweet face in the pasture. www.edwardfielding.com

Summer Cottage

Father’s in the woodshed,
Cleaning forty fish;
Mother’s in the kitchen,
Washing every dish;
Sister’s upstairs making
Every bed we own;
The company is on the porch
With the graphophone.

Father does the rowing,
Brother does the chores,
Mother does the baking,
Sister sweeps the floors;
Everybody’s working,
Here at Idlenook,
Except the company — and that
Sits down and reads a book.

Artists Work Brings Joy To A Little Boy

When little Timmy's mother took in a small pug dog for a friend on a temporary basis, Timmy could not think that he would become so attached to the little clownish dog in such a short time.

The small pug was forced from his home by a demented landlord and had to find a home during the busy holiday season. All through Christmas break the dog and Timmy were never apart.

After some legal work and a judge who sided with the tenant, the cute little dog was returned to his home. As a thank you gift the pug's owners sent Timmy a pillow with the pug's photo on it.

New Vintage Tractors Artwork

Photographer and visual artist Edward M. Fielding (www.edwardfielding.com) has just release a new artwork in his popular series of vintage tractor photographs, paintings and art.

Fielding says, "I now have close to 100 photographs and artworks in my Vintage Tractors portfolio. I'm a a big fan of these farming workhorses, really the most important machine on any farm. I'm especially fond of the old reliable equipment that family farmers keep in good shape. Some of restored as a piece of history and become as pampered as a classic car but I see a lot of these old tractors in use around the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire where I live.

At local fairs you can see vintage tractor clubs displaying their pride and joys but I really get excited when I see one of these beauties cutting hay in a neighbor's field or pulling a trailer float at a local Fourth of July parade."

The newest artwork is an acrylic painting effect created using an original...

37th Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival Captured In New Movie

It's that time of year again. Time to people to climb into woven baskets strapped on to giant colorful nylon sacks,, fill them with hot air and float into the sky! This new video from multimedia artist Edward M. Fielding captures the fun and excitement of the 37th Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Quechee, Vermont.

Over 20 hot air balloons fill up and take off into the sky like something out of the Wizard of Oz. Weirs Beach Laconia New Hampshire

End of May but the weather has been as warm as summer here in New Hampshire. After a week of tearing up old carpeting in the house and doing yardwork I decided I needed a day out. Since I had to drop off a woodstove door for repair in Meredith, I decided to check out Weirs Beach which is just around the corner.

For some reason I've never been down Scenic Drive so this was a new place to explore. The temps were in the 80s and people were on the beach as well are busy getting the areas spruced up for Memorial Day Weekend.

Painting railings, sweeping out arcades, fixing up old porches. I wandered around looking for interesting things to photograph and found this wonderful section of turn of the century beach cottages on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee.

What a treasure trove of small, tiny Victorian gems! Some were in need of a lot of fixing up but this one at the end of the street was stunningly painted and renovated.

New Series On Maple Sugaring

March 28th, 2013

New Series On Maple Sugaring

Here in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont along the Connecticut River a fascinating tradition emerges from the deep cold winters. A warm, humid, sweet aroma raises from backyard sugar houses as the cold nights and warming days of early spring not only melt the snows but awaken the trees who start sending complex sugars up from their roots to the branches and leaf buds. A chemical signal to shake off winter hibernation and to start producing leaves and flowers for the coming warm season.

For hundreds of years enterprising New England farmers have tapped into this flow of sap to gather, boil and bottle sweet maple syrup. The process combines generational traditions, old fashioned know how and modernized equipment to produce one of the most natural and beloved food products in the world.

Join photographer Edward M. Fielding has he journey's inside the sugarhouses of New England to show you the amazing handcrafted product that is real maple syrup. ...

Alternative Airstream-Punk Reality From Artist Edward M. Fielding

Alternative Airstream-Punk Reality From Artist Edward M. Fielding

As a child do you remember looking up in the sky and seeing shiny aluminium streamlined travel trailers floating above the horizon? Maybe in Grandma's photo album there was a Kodak Brownie camera snapshot of a family camping above the treeline in their new lighter than air Airstream travel trailer? No?

Artist Edward Fielding has re-imagined an alternative history in which the iconic American brand of RV, the always retro-futuristic aerodynamic Airstream camper was not only lightweight, cool, hip and portable but also able to somehow overcome the laws of physics.

In his new series, Fielding's Airstreams fly over head water towers, float over the landscape and migrate south for the winter.

Fielding's work hints toward the Steam Punk movement with its revisionist history of what could have been but an added element of the absurd. Indeed the Airstream campers have the suggestion that they could fly, their design directly descends from the aircraft industry, but...
