A painting is a process, a record of a series of decisions taken by the artist. I compare this process to a chess match. The opening gambit, if you will, is often far from the end result. I don't start with a preconceived notion of how the painting will finish. Rather move after move, decision after decision is applied until I can walk into the studio and decide that the work is completed - checkmate.
